New Linux OS with Google’s Material Design in the Making!

Pointing out that Google’s new material design approach has turned out to be a grand success. Quite honestly, if we are to look at the design concept implemented in the latest Android 5.0 Lollipop. Promising a raft of new changes, massive number of new API’s, we have to admit that the Lollipop is going beyond the mobile form factor.

Of course on the lighter side, Android Lollipop is continuing the legacy of Google’s sweet naming system. 🙂

Well again, Google is not often considered a streamlined creator of ideas, especially because they are less into designs. However, the material design adopted by them in Lollipop is creating quite an impression. Here we go! Linux developers are looking forward to make a new distribution which is capable of obeying the guidelines of this new material design concept of Google. A developer determined enough to build a Linux distro that fits in the regulations of a carefully crafted Google project, by itself is a projected statement. Well definitely it is not going to be similar theme adoption, we all know. The differences are too big from what is already available on Linux and there is no realist way of doing it, at least not with any kind of success. This is why the developers actually need a new desktop environment and a new Linux base that would be under their complete control.

The Quantum OS as the new project is called, would be an operating system based on Linux which conforms to Google’s material design guidelines. It is anticipated that the desktop shell and applications would be developed primarily using Qt 5 and QML, which will allow to build highly polished and dynamic user interfaces and will work well for implementing Material Design. The main focus will be on creating a stable and easy to use operating system with a heavy emphasis on well-thought out design.

The project was initially named as Quartz, but there was a conflict with the X.Org X Window System that runs on OS X, which is called XQuartz. The named was quickly changed to Quantum.

Well, the whole thing is in the works, and we never know what happens at the end of the day. Let us hope it gives the developer and users lot of things to cheer about. 🙂

For me, the idea of material design + Linux = Awesome!
